Obama calls for an undivided Jerusalem as Israel’s capital

As president of the USA, Mr. Obama confirmed the views he had expressed about Jerusalem when he was still a senator addressing Aipac in 2008

In 2012, on the insistence of President Obama, the sentence “Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel” was reinstated in the Democratic Party’s platform after it had been removed temporarily ostensibly because the party  wanted to spotlight other elements of Mr. Obama’s policy.

According to a NY Times report of September 5, 2012 a senior administration official emphasized that the president had intervened to bring the platform in line with his own views. The President’s 2008 view which the official said are unchanged can be heard clearly here

“The president expressed his view in 2008, and it hasn’t changed,” the official said. “The party platform has not changed from 2008. And the position of the United States government hasn’t changed in decades as it relates to Israel’s capital and peace negotiations.”

The chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, said in a statement that the change was made to “maintain consistency with the personal views expressed by the president and in the Democratic Party platform in 2008.”

TEXT OF THE RESOLUTION PASSED AT THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION IN SEPTEMBER 2012

Amendment 2
Page 63, line 26: Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel. The parties have agreed that Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths.

A senior administration official emphasized that the president had intervened to bring the platform in line with his own views. “The president expressed his view in 2008, and it hasn’t changed,” the official said. “The party platform has not changed from 2008. And the position of the United States government hasn’t changed in decades as it relates to Israel’s capital and peace negotiations.”
